Green Screen vs. Removable Background AI
Removable background (Magic Screen) and a green screen are two standard options for using creative backgrounds in photo booth images. Although they sound similar, they offer different levels of versatility and quality. While the green screen is an old-school go-to – Magic Screen is the updated modern alternative. Let’s explore both and compare.
Benefits of Both
Both workflows enable guests to take an image in a photo booth and choose a background that fits the party theme, mood, city, or celebration. In previous events, we’ve used beach, galaxy, movie, cityscapes, nature scenes, rainbows, cartoons, balloon collages, and even the moon. Any image that is high-quality image can become a background with either format. Each requires specific elements to work well, which could be the determining factor in deciding which is best for your event.
Green Screen Application
Removing a background using a green screen requires a green fabric backdrop. It works well with the proper lighting and the correct-sized green screen backdrop. If your green screen is not the appropriate size, the camera cannot capture the entire image, which will affect the final photo. The depth of field has to match exactly, and should someone bump the backdrop or moves it even slightly, it can impact the image removal results.
Green Screen Issues
Another problem with the green screen is the additional lighting required to make it work properly. It takes solid photography skills to understand how to properly light a greenscreen so that you do not get shadows behind the people from the photo booths flash. Additionally, anyone who wears green, yellow, or blue would have problems being photographed using a green screen setup. They essentially become invisible; see the image below as an example.
Magic Screen & Our Mirror Photo Booth
The next generation of removable backgrounds is cloud-based and requires no green screen but will need a strong wifi connection. We call it Magic Screen because the software and interface are magical! The Magic Screen works like this; the guests’ image is photographed with our mirror photo booth.
Next, the guest’s image uploads via the internet to a website that removes the background. The website then returns the image to the photo booth software’s folder. Once the image returns to the folder, the guest can choose any preselected image for their background. We offer up to seven background images fitting the theme for most events; this is the perfect amount of fun options!
In this video, you can see the guest taking their picture, swiping to choose a background they love, and then selecting and printing their final photo.
Magic Screen | Removable Background Issues
The only issue with removable background is that it needs strong wifi and bandwidth to work correctly. If the location doesn’t have enough wifi strength, the images will not upload or download to the software correctly. If you’re in a remote area, a green screen is a better option for your event.
Magic Screen & Our Selfie Station
Magic Screen works similarly using our iPad Selfie Station. The workflow allows a guest to choose their background before taking photos, unlike the mirror photo booth that permits you to select a scene after the picture is snapped.
Magic Screen Selfie Station Attributes
However, a perk of our iPad Selfie Station, guests can choose either landscape or portrait settings, with the mirror photo booth can only use landscape images for the magic screen to work well. The options for background settings are limitless with the Selfie Station. The workflow permits adding fun filters like the ‘Glam Shot’ and a Kardashian-inspired filter or a beauty filter that makes all the girls glow like Hollywood stars!
